MAINTENANCE OF IDENTITY AND DESCRIPTION OF THE CULTIVAR OF MAIZE: CP-V-20

Abstract

To prove the identity and description of the maize (Zea mays L.) cv CP-V-20, in Montecillo, México in 1997 five cycles of half sibs maintenance were compared against two origins of the parent of variety Huamantla (V-23) throught quantitative and qualitative descriptors. Quantitative traits (related to spikes and yield) showed variability and significant differences in the seven treatments, while qualitative traits, using the mode only presented little differences. However, the higher variations to both cases was detected by means of principal component analysis where the following quantitative traists: first leaf length, and wide, number of trillers, ear up and down internodes length, stem diameter, spike and peduncle length, days to male and female flowering, plant height, number or ears/plant, ear diameter and weight, number of rows and kernels/ear, kernel and cob weight among others were the descriptors that more contributed to the showed variation; and for qualitative traits: seedling color leaf, leaf margin pubescence, glume basis antocianin, spike shape lateral branches position, rows/ear disposition, grain crown shape respectively, allowed to detect differences among origins. The conclusions were: that for quantitative traits cv CP-V-20 changed with respect to Huamantla (V-23). And for quantitative traits only little differences were detected, maybe due, to the scale values used. The principal analysis showed that 18 quantitative traits contributed to the variation presented among the seven materials studied, and for the qualitative traits only eight were impotant in the variation analysis.
