Abstract

Pop corn importations from the United States represent 30 million pesos a year, In order to prevent this the National lnstitute for Agricultural Research (I N I A) is carrying out breeding ·and cultural practices research projects on such kind of corn. In 1970, at the Center for Agricultural Research of El Bajío (CIAB), two experimenls were conducted, In one of them the purpose was to
test the yield of the possible single crosses among 10 S1 lines previously selected for their expansion capacity. The obJective
of the other experiment was to determine the yield of 4 of the single crosses and of one open pollinated experimental varicty through 10 planting dates. Planting dates were programed every two weeks from February lst. to June 16th, From the firsl experiment six single crosses were considered the best at the 5 % significance level. From the second experiment the F tests for all the factors in volved were significant. Eight planting dates werc statistically the same; the best variety was significantly different from the other four; and there were three planting dates in which the two best varieties yielded statistically the same.
