Abstract

A funguous root rol of chickpea known as "rabia" causes wilt in infected stocks that generall y kills the plants before flowering. Unfortunately, all commercial varieties under culti vation in Mexico are susceptible to the disease. In 1969 two resistant lines, L-1186 and L-41, were obtained. Line L-1186 was identified as belonging to the chickpea type variety :porquero cafe" (brown chickpea for swine feed) and line L-41 to "porquero negro" (black chickpea for swine feed). These two lines are being used as sources of resistance in the breeding programs of CIAS (Center of Agricultural Research of Sinaloa).
