Abstract

There is not a well defined statistical method in the literature for vegeta ble crops experimentation where yield can be classified in several categories, lt is the purpose of this study to describe a logi­cal analisis procedure based in economic considerations. In compa­rative experimentation, the best treatment is defined as that which produces the maximum economic gain per unit area, lt is propossed an economical index as the characteristic to be analyzed. This index depends on the observed yield in each one of the categories in which yield is divided on as well as on the corresponding unitary price. lt ahould be clear that the propossed method can be directly applied to the breeding experiment s where it is important to identify the best varieties. The methodology is illustrated with results of an experiment with water melon varieties carried ou t by the Vegetable Crops Depart­ment of INIA (National lnstitute for Agricultural Research).
