Abstract

In order to identify and to recommend better varieties or hybrids of coro (Zea mays L.) in Southem Jalisco, lNIF AP started research work in 1984 in the Production Unit located at Tuxpan, Jal. First results indicated that the best variety was V- 524 (Tuxpeñito). In 1987 and 1988, evaluations were carried out in La Higuera, Tuxpan, with materials originated in the Northem México and Northem Tamaulipas; the best materials were H-430, H-420, Dekalb B-833 and B-555, yielding 6121, 5386, 5263 and 4119 kg ha-1, respectively. In 1989 two validation plots were established in San Juan Espanatica and La Higuera, with hybrids H-422 and H-433, which were
compared with the average of four adjacents plots, planted with Dekalb B-840 and Pioneer P-3288; these last two materials were outyielded by the two first ones. In 1990, a plot was established in La Higuera; in this location hybrids H-430 and HV-313 yielded 3312 kg ha-1 and 3924 kg ha-1, respectively. In Tecalitlán the hybrid H-430 yielded 4947 kg ha-1 while P-3288 yielded 4572 kg ha-1. According to these results, CCVP and SARH authorized in 1991 the commercial planting of cultivars H-422 and H-430 in the subtropical region of Southem Jalisco.
