IMPROVEMENT OF WHEAT IN THE SOVIET UNION
Main Article Content
Abstract
Wheat Triticum aestivum L. is the main cereal grown in our country. The USSR produces more than 110 million tons of this grain each year on an area of more than 50 million hectares. Wheat, both winter and spring, is grown in the most varied climatic conditions. The unit yield varies from less than one to 5-6 tons/ha. The genetic improvement of wheat in the USSR is organized by ecological zones, and in each of them a breeding center has been created.
The main objective of genetic improvement work is the generation of highly productive wheat varieties that have good grain quality.
