Abstract

The water wealth of the central-eastern area of Morelos has allowed the use of the springs and the Cuautla river for growing watercress (Nasturtium officinale R. Br.) in the municipality of Cuautla, where the planting of this vegetable is more than 70 years old. However, information on the production system and the economic impact in the region is scarce. The aim of this research was to describe social, technical and marketing aspects of watercress grown in the municipality of Cuautla, Morelos. The research was carried out in 2018. Growers were interviewed and visits were made to their production units. The above allowed to obtain information on aspects related to production, commercialization and economic benefits. Watercress producing ejidos are Cuautla, Cuautlixco and Santa Inés. There are two associations and some independent growers, who have dispersed this vegetable throughout the production area, as well as its agronomic management and markets.
