Abstract

In 1989, a research was carried out in the State of Zacatecas, México, in order to characterize the agents responsible to provide technical assistance to farmers and ranchers. A survey was applied to a sample of 54 extensionists selected at random for the
capture of information through a questionnaire of 67 items. Results indicated tha the extensionists have a low level of contact with the Experimental Research Station, institution in charge of the generation of technology in the State, as well as with the massive
means of communication that provide husbandry information. Most of the interviewed extensionists have been working in the State for 9 to 12 years, and on an average they are 32 years old; their contact with producers is mínimum; they prefer the brochures
to get information; the main limitation they have to provide technical assistance is the lack of didactical material; main crops in which they need more information are: bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), peach (Prunus persica), chili (Capsicum annuun), grape (Vitis
vinifera), onion (Allium cepa), and apple (Malus pumila).
