Abstract

The accumulation of carbohydrates in the aerial part of ringed trees seems to stimulate the flowering, fruit setting, growth and fruit maturation. Based on the above, the percentage of carbohydrates in one-year-old shoots was evaluated, before and after girdling and harvest, and in shoots and roots after harvest. The determination was made in three peach cultivars (Prunus persica L.) with low cold requirements, which were under an intensive production system, using the staining method described by Bringhurst et al. (1960). The results obtained indicate that the accumulation of carbohydrates before harvest in the shoots depends both on the season in which it is carried out and of the cultivar. After harvest (22 days), carbohydrates tend to accumulate both in shoots (50 and 70) and in roots (50 and 45%) in "Flordagold" and "Amapre" respectively, but not in "Flordaprinee" which was kept in growth.
