Abstract

In the tropical regions of the State of Veracruz there is a preference for beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with small, opaque, black seeds. In 1981, a new variety with these characteristics, Negro Veracruz, was obtained for the central and southern areas of the state. This variety had a yield of 1.5 ton/ha in 17 experiments carried out during the period from 1975 to 1981, while the landrace varieties yielded 0.7 ton/ha on average. Negro Veracruz comes from a collection made in the Zempoala region, Vera in 1970, which was improved through individual and mass selections, obtaining good uniformity, acceptable yield and wide adaptability. Its growth habit is indeterminate, with bush-type plants 50 cm high and short guides. Flowering begins after 35 days and is harvested between 80 and 90 days after sowing; In addition, it is resistant to rust and anthracnose. This new variety will allow farmers to have another alternative in the use of improved seeds and the bean production areas in the state will also be expanded.
