Abstract

In the Yucatán Peninsula (states of Yucatán, Campeche, Q. Roo) and in the State of Tabasco, 91 thousand hectares of corn are planted annually on mechanized soils. The average grain yield is less than 2 ton ha-1.

V -532 was obtained by recurrent selection of reciprocal full siblings in the Tuxpeño Tropical Cristalino (TIC) population. Population improvement began in 1982 in the Cotaxtla Experimental Field, Veracruz, headquarters of the genetic improvement program for tropical corn at INIFAP. The evaluation of 250 families, derived from the original TIC population, was done in six locations in the tropical area. The best 10 families selected across localities constituted the experimental variety TH-TIC 82, which was subjected to experimental evaluation in the tropical area from 1983 to 1985. Simultaneously, in Yucatán, TH-TIC 82 was visually selected for better coverage of cob and lower plant height, during two cycles; From this process the variety V-532 resulted. In evaluations carried out from 1983 to 1989 on mechanized soils of the Yucatan Peninsula and Tabasco, using two to seven locations per year, V -532 experimentally yielded 3598 kg ha-1, 10% more than V-528; The hybrid H-507 yielded 3853 kg ha-1, but only in three environments where it was included. In validation plots, from 1985 to 1989, in the same region, V-532 yielded 3332 kg ha-1, 16% more than V-528 and presented a similar behavior to H-507, which was occasionally included.

V-532 is a free-pollinated variety, easy seed multiplication, with white grains of crystalline texture, intermediate-late vegetative cycle with 60 days to flowering and between 120 to 130 days from sowing to harvest, medium plant size (172 cm) and cob (95 cm). Its specific adaptation is for the mechanized soils of the Yucatan Peninsula and Tabasco, although it presents good general adaptation in tropical areas. It is registered with the National Registry of Plant Varieties with the number MAZ 161190-161.
