Abstract

Blanco Dentado-2 (BD2) and Lucio Blanco (LB), parental populations of the commercial intervarietal hybrid HV-313, were submited to selection for healthy ears, plant aspect, and grain yield using the S1 lines recurrent selection method in central part of Jalisco, México. In 1987 the first selection cycle was evaluated in both populations and the cross between them, at three rainfall locations. The objective was to evaluate both the direct genetic advance in the populations and the indirect response in their cross. In LB there was 21.5% grain yield increase and a decrease of 27% of damaged ears. In BD2 it was obtained only 1.8% yield increase and an important improvement in healthy ears was obtained. The cross decreased its yield in 3.6%, but it improved in plant height, that was lower, and in healthy ears.
