Abstract

In the tropical regions of México, there is a preference for small and opaque black beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). For several years a series of black bean genotypes with the above characteristics, were evaluated; among them the experimentalline E-44 was the best. During the period of 1987 to 1991 a series of uniform field trials were conducted with different black bean varieties. The genotypes E-44, Jamapa and Negro Huasteco-81 obtained a seed yield average of 1151, 866 and 950 Kg/ha, respectively. Six yield trials, with different black seeded beans were simultaneously conducted at Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Hidalgo and Yucatán states during the Autumn-Wintercrop cycle of 1990-1991. The results showed that E-44 (1185/Kg/ha) had higher yield than Jamapa (1054 Kg/ha). The stabilty analysis applied to the E-44 genotype showed that this line was stable
across environments. In addition, this line showed tolerance to Bean Golden Mosaic Virus and rust resistance.
